A little over a month after their initial announcement, Björk and Rosalía have released their new song, “Oral”. Proceeds from the track will help Seydisfjörður residents continue their legal fight against foreign-owned salmon farming operations in Iceland. The two musicians and Sega Bodega produced the song. Iceland’s public outrage over the environmental impacts of open-net salmon farms, which are said to be endangering the country’s naturally unique fjords and indigenous wildlife, has grown this year. Björk participated in a protest in Reykjavík with other citizens and agricultural workers in early October. During the demonstration, some protesters threw pesticide on fish carcasses placed on the steps of Iceland’s parliament building.
Between her 1997 album Homogenic and her 2001 album Vespertine, Björk wrote most of “Oral”. However, she told Pitchfork that she has lost the original tape of the song for over twenty years. While on tour in Australia earlier this year, he saw the word “oral” on TV and decided to listen to the song again. He commented, “I enjoy that the song is upbeat.”
